A prohibition notice has been served on The Smiler by Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspectors, stopping its use "until action is taken to deal with the cause of the failure". 

SAW - The Ride, another multi-car roller coaster manufactured by Gerstlauer which is at Thorpe Park, has also been shut for the foreseeable future.

Sonic Spinball was temporarily closed to allow new safety protocols for multi-car roller coasters to be introduced, as an extra measure to reinforce their safe operation.

Various signage and merchandise relating to The Smiler has been removed from the park.
