Six male gazelles are expected to make a big splash at Chessington World of Adventures – even though the new arrivals can spend their entire lives without ever drinking water.
The Dorcas gazelles originate from semi-desert areas of Africa and Arabia – and obtain all the moisture they need from plants in their diet. And following their arrival at the Resort this week, they’ve been busy exploring their new home within the Wanyama Village & Reserve, where they join other African animal residents including zebras, mongoose and meerkats.
Chessington ZooDorcas gazelles can withstand extremely high temperatures, making them one of the most desert-adapted breed of gazelle - and they can also run at speeds of up to 40mph! They are part of the European Endangered Species Programme and currently only around 35-40,000 exist in areas including Iraq, Israel, Sudan and Egypt’s eastern desert. Chessington Explorer Sonia Freeman said: “Our new arrivals are one of the very few animals in the world that can survive without ever drinking water, which makes them very special. Our team will ensure they have everything they need to keep them happy.
They’re a beautiful breed of gazelle and, as they’re currently listed under the threatened species list as vulnerable, it’s a privilege to be able to home some at Chessington. We’re confident that their neighbours in Wanyama Village will make them feel very welcome.
Adventurers will be able to see them in the Wanyama Village & Reserve at the Chessington World of Adventures in 2011.
