Tiger Cubs Born

Chessington World of Adventures & Zoo has announced the arrival of two rare Sumatran Tiger cubs.

The seven-week-old Sumatran cub Kabus and his sister Kelabu were named after the grey and misty morning on which they were born (20 February), but now they are brightening up life at their home in Chessington Zoo.

The subspecies of tiger is one of the world’s most endangered creatures, due to poaching and the destruction of their habitat.  It is thought that fewer than 500 are left in the wild in their native home on the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

The tiny two-month-old brother and sister are the second set of cubs born to proud parents Ratna and Batu in the past two years.  The pair is being hailed as another major success for the Zoo’s breeding programme.

Senior Carnivore Keeper Jon Merrington said:

Born on a grey and misty morning in February, Chessington Zoo keepers have named the pair Kabus meaning grey, and Kelabu meaning mist in Malay.

This follows the Zoo’s tradition of naming animals in the language of their native habitats.  Earlier this year keepers with a sense of humour christened a rare King Vulture chick, native to Central and South America, Tatin - which means ‘small cute chick’ in Spanish.

Although the Sumatran tiger is the smallest of all existing tiger subspecies, the males grow to almost eight feet and weigh in at 300 pounds.
