Review: Terror Mountain 2019

Celebrating its fifth year of fear, Terror Mountain returns in 2019 with five exciting live action horror attractions, including the new dystopian escape experience The Watchers.

As we approached this abandoned mine in the Welsh countryside, in the darkness of night and surrounded by fog, we were already feeling a bit creeped out. We arrived a little early so were waiting in our car when a scarecrow man appeared at our window, and as we leaned over to get a proper look he whipped out a torch and dazzled us. When he moved on to his next victim, we got out of the car and approached the entrance. As soon as we entered the reception, a twisted clown slid across the floor to greet us. At this point, we realised this would be a very different kind of scare event!

Set in a genuine Victorian mine, Terror Mountain features five terrifyingly convincing, highly themed experiences. New for 2019, the dystopian escape experience The Watchers, where you not only have to survive but figure out a set of clues to win your escape. There are also four returning attractions: Relic, Summoning, Retribution and The Unknown.

  • The Watchers - this hybrid escape room and scare maze was a fantastic start to our night, with multiple well-themed sections, special effects, intense acting and lots of participation. We had to compete against each other and try to evade our captors.

  • Relic - a museum of curiosities that turns into a classic curtain maze. What made this so entertaining were the brilliant actors, who made this fairly simple attraction so much fun.

  • Summoning - you'll gather around a ouija board to conduct a séance, but will anyone from the 'other side' step over? It's an effective show, with some excellent storytelling and lots of audience participation.

  • Retribution - descend down into a REAL mine, this is not a set. The hard harts provided are essential as you walk deep underground into the dark, damp tunnels to meet the devil and discover your fate. The smoke filled maze of passages are really disorientating and there are moments of complete darkness.

  • The Unknown - join a paranormal investigation in the pitch black woods, guided only by a rope. With strange encounters, superb personalised interactions and a thrilling finale, this was definitely a highlight of the event.

The eerie atmosphere across the site was very much enhanced by the frequent presence of the roaming characters. We had multiple personal encounters with creepy Phlorence and his sock puppet Derek, scarecrow man and twisted clown.

At the end of the event, the same twisted clown that had pursued us throughout the night chased us out of the reception and into the car park. He then watched us leave, in a final chilling act of intimidation.

We were guests of the attraction for the purposes of this review.

Terror Mountain is running on selected nights until 31st October 2019, don’t miss out on this unique scare attraction, grab your tickets online at www.terrormountain.co.uk/tickets
