Comcast NBCUniversal and the UK government have today unveiled the official full name and logo for the highly anticipated Bedfordshire project: Universal United Kingdom Resort.
The landmark announcement came during a high profile visit to the Bedford site by Chancellor Rachel Reeves, who met with Universal executives and some of the project's very first local hires. The unveiling event marks a monumental moment for UK theme park fans, confirming that Europe’s first ever Universal Studios theme park is officially locked in for a planned 2031 opening.
A Mammoth Investment for UK Tourism
This is not just a standard theme park. The project represents one of the largest single investments in the history of the UK tourism sector, totalling a jaw dropping £7.3 billion.
NBCUniversal's parent company, Comcast, will invest more than £5 billion into building the entertainment resort complex over an intense five year construction phase, with a further £1 billion committed to capital investments over its first decade of operation.
Crucially for the local area and future visitors, this project is backed by £1.3 billion in taxpayer support. The government funding is specifically earmarked to get local infrastructure up to scratch before the gates open, ensuring that the millions of tourists expected each year can actually get to the park smoothly.
What We Know About the Resort So Far
The 500 acre site, located at a former brickworks in Kempston Hardwick just south of Bedford, will now be transformed into a sprawling holiday destination. Here is a breakdown of what has been confirmed for the initial phase:
- A World Class Theme Park: Featuring Universal's signature immersive storytelling, cutting edge rides, and live entertainment.
- On Site Accommodation: A themed 500 room resort hotel.
- Retail and Entertainment: A dedicated shopping, dining, and nightlife district similar to Universal CityWalk in Orlando and Hollywood.
- Year Round Operations: Plans indicate the resort is being designed to stay open 365 days a year.
How Will You Get There?
Because the resort is expected to attract more than eight million visitors in its first year alone, the surrounding transport network is getting a massive overhaul.
Thanks to the £1.3 billion infrastructure injection, the Department for Transport will fund extensive upgrades to local roads, including the major A421 corridor.
Train travel will also be incredibly easy for those coming from London and further afield. Upgrades are being made to Bedford station, and a brand new railway station will be constructed at nearby Wixams, making the park highly accessible by rail.
Initial enabling works are already well underway on the Bedfordshire site, and the full scale construction is scheduled to begin soon.
