Alton Towers Scarefest 2026: The Ultimate Halloween Event - review & photos

As the autumn leaves settle across Staffordshire and a chilling mist rolls over the historic estate, Britain's greatest escape undergoes its most anticipated transformation of the year. Alton Towers Scarefest is back for 2026, running on selected dates until 1st November.

With the park operating from 10am until 9pm, thrill-seekers and families are treated to a massive eleven hours of hair-raising thrills, rides and attractions in the dark, and an expanded lineup of spine-tingling live Halloween entertainment.

Having attended the exclusive VIP Launch Event on opening weekend, we experienced everything this year's multi-award-winning event has to offer. Read on for the definitive independent guide to Scarefest 2026.

Park Atmosphere and Entertainment

From the moment you step onto Towers Street, the park is presented exceptionally well, boasting fresh new Scarefest decorations that elevate the Halloween mood right away. It is always a joy to see the iconic Alton Ancestors performing their high-energy, infectious dance routines, creating a celebratory yet spooky tone.

Beyond the energetic street dance routines, the family-friendly entertainment lineup is wonderfully rich this year. Younger guests can join the super-freaky Halloween friends in their multi-coloured playground during the Freaky Friends Live Show, which features spooktacular music, engaging meet and greets, and brilliant photo opportunities. Additionally, guests can enjoy Haunted Harmonies (New for 2026), where recently resurrected vocalists rise from the dead for a haunting half hour of spine-chilling hits.

When night falls, the atmosphere shifts dramatically. Towers Street looks splendid under atmospheric mood lighting/smoke, and the brilliant light show Symphony of the Towers: The Phantom Melody (New for 2026) transforms the iconic towers into the stage for a dazzling display of colour and sound, synchronising music and light as the Earl calls upon the spirits of his ancestors to cross over into the world of the living.

The event continues to offer by far the widest and most diverse range of Halloween activities of any theme park in the UK, successfully balancing family-friendly daytime fun with the genuinely intense psychological scares.

Final Exhibit (New for 2026)

Undoubtedly the crown jewel and a major talking point of this year's event, Final Exhibit is a masterclass in theme park horror design. Located inside a marquee, the production team has gone to extraordinary lengths, utilising the overhead roof space cleverly to build a claustrophobic, deeply immersive environment.

The attraction plays heavily on park nostalgia, making it an absolute treat for long-time enthusiasts who appreciate the history of Alton Towers. As guests wander what appears to be a museum exhibition of newly discovered park artefacts, they are lured into the hidden archive of The Curator, a chilling figure obsessed with preserving the past. You come face-to-face with original or replica theming props from several retired attractions, including the giant Bookworm from Storybook Land, a retro robot from Toyland Tours, and one of the giant yellow ducks from The Flume. Classic park mascots from decades gone by populate the dark rooms, though their intentions are far from welcoming. Silent, hypnotised servants known as The Archivists stalk the shadows, ensuring that those who fail to escape become permanent living exhibits.

COMPOUND

Returning for another year, COMPOUND plunges participants into a grim, sci-fi military facility where mad scientists attempt to weaponise human DNA. The entrance sets the tone brilliantly, but the real magic and chaos happen once Phalanx operatives separate your group and lock you in individual holding cells.

Because guests navigate the multi-route maze seperately, the experience is entirely dynamic. Which rooms you encounter and how long your journey lasts vary wildly. While this creates phenomenal replay value, it can lead to stark differences in experiences. On our run, one member exited much sooner than the other without seeing as much.

Edge of the Forest

Nestled at the border of the Dark Forest, Edge of the Forest continues to excel with its clever concept and rich folklore. The storyline revolves around the Leshwall, the sinister spirit said to twist trees and invade the minds of unsuspecting travellers. With whispers winding through withered trees and creepy tree-like entities lurking in the shadows, it remains an intense, atmospheric woodland nightmare.

Altonville Mine Tours: Tiny’s Revenge

A reliable fan-favourite housed beneath the Towers, Tiny’s Revenge proves that some horrors only get better with age. Utilising clever lighting, claustrophobic spaces, pungent smells, countless props, and the relentless harassment from the backward inhabitants, it remains a pillar of the Scarefest maze lineup.

Scare Zones (Free-Flow)

Dark Hollow

Expanding on the mythology of the nearby roller coaster TH13TEEN, Dark Hollow is a free-flowing outdoor scare zone where ancient roots stir and shadows flicker between hollow trees. Sightings of The Twisted, creatures punishing those who disturb nature, watch guests' every move, making it a delightfully eerie pathway as dusk settles.

Burial Grounds

Inhabited by The Unchosen, a cult of outcasts rejected by the Wicker Man, the Burial Grounds places guests right into a desecrated realm of unearthed bodies, flaming shrines, and monstrous deities. This returning free-flow attraction is atmospheric, imposing, and brilliantly acted.

Family-Friendly Spooks

Trick O’ Treat Town with HARIBO and MAOAM

Returning to delight younger guests, this fun interactive walk-through experience is absolute perfection for families or anyone craving wholesome Halloween fun. Guests explore Spooky Avenue and the Witchy Woods, knocking on colourful doors to meet quirky characters and collect generous amounts of sweets. The detailed sets, enthusiastic cast members, and sweet rewards make it a standout family attraction.

Amigos in the Afterlife

Inspired by the vibrant traditions of Día de los Muertos, Amigos in the Afterlife is a colourful and joyful walk-through experience. Imagine the emotional warmth and visual splendour of the film Coco brought to life as a theatrical experience, complete with cheerful guiding spirits, catchy songs, and gentle dancing.

Food and Drink: Cargo

Keeping your energy up across an eleven-hour day of scares and thrills is essential, and a notable highlight this year is the introduction of the street food area Cargo. Located near the Towers, Cargo is a brilliant new addition offering diverse, high-quality culinary options and street food stalls. It provides a vibrant hub to sit back, refuel, and soak in the bustling atmosphere before heading back out into the mist for more rides and mazes.

Rides in the Dark

One of the greatest joys of Scarefest is the opportunity to experience the resort's world-class coaster lineup after sunset. Cruising through the piercing drops and twists of Nemesis Reborn, braving the rushing flames of Wicker Man, or navigating the multiple disorienting inversions of The Smiler adds an entirely new dimension of adrenaline. Ride availability throughout our visit was strong, and coupling the daytime scares with night-riding makes for an unforgettable itinerary.

Our Verdict and Ticketing

Alton Towers Scarefest 2026 is a triumph. By successfully blending high-production historical nostalgia in Final Exhibit with robust family traditions like Trick O’ Treat Town and stellar night-riding, the resort delivers an unmatched seasonal event.
