When the creators of the UK's famous Boomtown Fair opened Wake The Tiger in Bristol back in 2022, they coined a brand-new term for their creation: the world's first-ever 'Amazement Park'. Having loved our time exploring their original Dream Factory experience, we couldn't wait to see what they would do with a vast new site in West London.

Spanning a massive 80,000 square feet inside Westfield London, Absurd City officially opens its portal on Thursday 15 October. It claims the crown as Europe's largest immersive art experience, and after stepping inside for an exclusive preview, we can safely say it lives up to every bit of the hype.

If you are looking for a day out in London that is entirely out of the ordinary, this is it.

What is Absurd City?

Absurd City is an interactive, self-guided walkthrough attraction suitable for all ages. Think of it as a cross between a theme park dark ride without the tracks, an escape room without the ticking clock, and a living art gallery where you are allowed to touch everything.

The storyline transports you to a parallel universe called Meridia. You step through an interdimensional portal as a 'Daytripper' visiting a metropolis contained under a giant protective dome. While the city authorities insist that "everything is fine", as you explore, you soon uncover a much deeper narrative running through the streets.

For returning fans of the Bristol attraction, Absurd City exists within the very same fictional universe, but the storytelling here is much clearer, more engaging, and incredibly rewarding to follow.

Exploring the Five Districts

As you wander through the metropolis, you will journey through five completely different themed districts, each with its own unique atmosphere and secrets:

  • Bloom Street: The adventure starts in this hyperactive, satirical shopping high street run by REX. You can explore the Stock Exchange, a Luxury Corner Shop, Make-U-Better Pharmaceuticals, and REX News headquarters.
  • Reclamia: The scrappy waste-processing area where mountains of discarded items are turned into recycled contraptions. Make sure to visit the Absurd City Museum here to see salvaged relics from before the climate collapse!
  • Imaginopolis: A brilliant explosion of color, art, sound, and play where local visionaries rebel against REX's rules through pure creative joy.
  • Neon//Nexus: A moody cyber-punk district for local hackers and biohackers who combine cybernetics with plant life to reboot Meridia's lost nature.
  • Elite HQ: A pristine corporate gated community for the city's ultra-wealthy. Unless you hold Emerald Platinum Elite status, gaining access is part of the fun challenge!

Your journey through these worlds culminates at The Genny, a exciting finale before heading back to reality.

What to Expect: Big Vistas & Hidden Passages

The sheer size of the space allows for a fantastic blend of high-impact visual spectacle and intimate exploration:

  • Massive Jaw-Dropping Vistas: The moment you enter the main districts, the visual scale delivers an immediate 'wow' factor.
  • Live Character Actors: As you wander the streets, you will encounter various characters who inhabit the city. The addition of live actors greatly enhances the experience, making the world feel reactive and truly alive.
  • Smell the World: Wake The Tiger has pulled out all the stops to engage all five senses. Extensive use of custom scents throughout means you do not just see and hear the distinctive spaces, you can actually smell them too!
  • Secret Passageways & Hidden Rooms: Exploration is heavily rewarded. You will find yourself pushing through hidden doors, slipping behind unnoticed alcoves, and even crawling through secret tunnels to reach hidden spaces.
  • Hands-on Interactivity: Unlike traditional museums or galleries, there are no "do not touch" warnings. The level of hands-on interaction is significantly higher than in Bristol, meaning you can easily spend hours investigating every prop, lever, and tactile detail.
  • Seamless Storytelling Tech: Instead of relying on clumsy headsets or obvious screen displays, technology is built naturally into the scenery itself, pulling you directly into the story without breaking the illusion.

Food & Drink: The Wunderground Bar & Kitchen

One of our biggest highlights was the attraction's dedicated food and drink space at the end of the journey, the Wunderground Bar & Kitchen.

Rather than feeling like an afterthought or a basic cafe tacked onto the exit, the Wunderground Bar & Kitchen is a fully themed continuation of the experience. The menu is fantastic, featuring delicious street-food tacos and bespoke themed drinks. We highly recommend trying the Hurricane 0% mocktail: a tropical blend of passion fruit, mango, coconut cream, and vanilla served over crushed ice, topped with a candy floss cloud.

After Hours: Adult-Only Evenings

While Absurd City is brilliant for families during the day, adults looking for a unique night out can visit during special After Hours sessions.

Running on selected dates from 7:00 PM until Midnight, these 18+ evenings allow you to explore the sprawling cityscape, enjoy the atmospheric lighting, and grab themed cocktails in a kid-free environment.
