Review: Room on the Broom - A Magical Journey at Chessington

The new family attraction based on Julia Donaldson's Room on the Broom is now open at Chessington World of Adventures, and we were invited to the launch on 9th March 2019.

Visitors to the theme park can watch the much-loved children’s story come to life as they visit the enchanted library and walk through the pages of the book written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler.

Help the Witch as her hat, bow and wand are sent tumbling to the ground. Encounter the Dog, Bird and Frog on your journey. Search high and low in the trees, fields and reeds. You will then encounter the Dragon, who fancies ‘Witch and chips’ for his tea!

For the launch event we were all treated to exclusive access, character appearances, animal encounters and storytelling sessions.

The new family attraction is located in the historic Burnt Stub Mansion, previously home to the Hocus Pocus Hall 4D walkthrough experience. A few of the features from the previous attraction have been re-used; such as the bookcase door, rotating tunnel and mirror maze.

Room on the Broom - A Magical Journey makes good use of a variety of effects including animatronics, projection mapping, smoke and water.

The walkthough includes a series of interactive scenes - children must jump up and down to fetch the hat, search for the bow in haystacks and catch fireflies to find the wand. These are simple ways to bring the story to life and make them feel part of it.

It is the second attraction at Chessington World of Adventures based on a children's book by British author Julia Donaldson, following the opening of The Gruffalo River Ride Adventure in 2017.

Given how hugely popular these stories are, we expect that this new walkthrough experience will be just as popular, despite not including a ride element. Therefore you should expect long queues on busy days.

For the launch it was apparent that some finishing touches and tweaks to the timings were needed, but these are normal teething issues that we would expect with any new attraction.

Room on the Broom - A Magical Journey is a lovely addition for young children visiting the theme park that includes over 40 rides and attractions in 10 themed lands, plus a Zoo and SEA LIFE centre.
