The Haunted Manor at Drayton Manor in 2023 - review & photos

Drayton Manor Resort launches a new-look Halloween event in 2023, The Haunted Manor. We were invited to a media event to experience it.

The event combines scare maze Castle of Shadows, scare experiences The Haunted Express and The Haunting: Reclaimed, scare zones and a Frightful Fireworks Finale, alongside rides in the dark, a live DJ and spooky food and drink options.

It runs on just 4 dates this year (28th, 29th, 30th and 31st October 2023) between 4pm – 8pm, and tickets are £24 per person.

The Haunted Manor has been created to compliment all the family-friendly daytime activities during Halloween at Drayton Manor.

Castle of Shadows

Things aren’t quite as they seem at Grimoire Academy. With whispers of a coven and ancient demons to awaken, will you escape?

Occupying an impressively themed medieval castle in the centre of Drayton Manor, this new scare maze attraction features a series of rooms and passages that have been transformed into Grimoire Academy.

A combination of lighting, smoke and sound effects made this walkthrough experience really immersive, and all of the scare actors gave enthusiastic performances. We thought that there were some brilliant scenes, moments of tension and plenty of effective jump scares.

Castle of Shadows is a huge improvement on last year's scare maze, Castle of Screams, with a much better storyline, sets and acting.

The Haunted Express

All aboard! Step onto this train ride and you’ll soon realise that you’ve booked a one-way ticket on a train ride from hell.

Especially for The Haunted Manor, the Polperro Express train ride has been reimagined as a scare experience. Passengers put on headphones that provide a soundtrack which combines dialogue, binaural sound and music to offer a fantastic audio enhancement to the ride, which also includes some themed sets and scare actors.

The Haunted Express is a perfect blend of spookiness, scares and humour, and there were noticeably more scare actors than last year, making this once again a highlight of the event.

The Haunting: Reclaimed

The Institute Of Metaphysical Research has long since concluded its investigation into the Drayton Green Vicarage, after the team mysteriously disappeared in 1996 with no trace. Until tonight...

The regular version of this attraction is part of the normal ride line-up at the park, but with its spooky theme, story, detailed sets and special effects, The Haunting fits so perfectly with the event. Especially for The Haunted Manor, some elements have reverted to the 1996 original.

It's a brilliant attraction as it is, but the added lighting and smoke effects in the queue and the addition of a scare actor, further enhanced the experience. The capacity of the attraction is an issue, with the queue reaching an hour and a half.

Scare Zones

The Viking Gods are angry, as an ancient battle rages. Will you leave their domain unharmed? The Adventure Cove circus has been cancelled, and the clowns are on the loose with carnage and chaos at every turn!

Drayton Manor has created two 'scare zones', Vikings: Ragnarok and Chaos Cove, which run for 3 hours during the event, 4.15pm – 7.15pm each night.

These may better be described as 'selfie spots', with guests able to pose for a photo in front of some props with the scare actors.

Frightful Fireworks Finale

End your day with a spectacular fireworks finale! It’s a spooky season party as you finish your evening at The Haunted Manor with a seven-minute spooktacular fireworks show!

Set to a Halloween soundtrack, this display combined fireworks and laser projection to create a brilliant end to the event.

The Haunted Manor is certainly an improvement on last year's Night at the Manor, with the best bits of that event combined with new experiences for 2023.

The scare attractions are recommended for those aged 10+ which feels right for the event, being aimed more at thrill-seeking families than hardcore horror fans.

We look forward to seeing what the resort has planned for 2024!
